Swatch and Review of Northern Star Summer Collection and Cuticle Oil

Press Sample

Introducing (part of) the Summer Collection from Northern Star polish! Kristin sent me four of her very soon to be released Summer Collection along with one of her scented cuticle oils. I received Appletini! I have to say the first thing I noticed was that she packaged all of these products really well, each polish came in its own box, was well wrapped in bubble wrap and tissue paper, if you order, you will see.

Let's talk about the cuticle oil first. I started using it as soon as I received my package. It smells great, really amazing scent if you like apples. Not exactly like an apple but a good interpretation. After the first application, I noticed a distinct difference for the better in the moisture and quality of my cuticles! I found the roller ball to be a little obtrusive, it felt strange for a smaller area like the cuticles. I would probably rather have used the doe foot applicator option, but that is a personal preference. I really would probably rather have a brush. Nevertheless, the roller ball got the job done, and I definitely have softer cuticles!

Night Swimming is a sort of blurple, a mix between blue and purple with some micro-shimmer in it. It dries to a flat finish, not quite a matte, but not quite a suede either. I might describe this as sort of a leather effect finish. If that isn't your thing, you can easily add a top coat. I left these photos without top coats for your viewing benefit. I only needed two easy coats here, it applies beautifully with no streaks and self levels very well.

Burning Embers is the holographic polish I received. I love holo polish! This is one of those colors you don't want to label because it is so multi-faceted. I would say it is a red but leans pink and shimmers orange. It also has some darker glitters in there that give it a more dynamic appearance. I love the shifting in this polish, I hope you can see it in the photos. I again, used two coats here with an smooth and easy application.

Beach Baby is a tangerine orange polish with some micro-shimmers in it as well. It has the same sort of leather effect finish as Night Swimming I have a few oranges in my collection, but none like this! I really love how it is tangerine rather than a straight orange. I actually had to use four thin coats here because I still had a visible nail line at three coats. If you use three thicker coats you could probably get away with that. Again, I had an easy application even with the multiple layers.

Electric Lime is the one that stands out a little from the pack. All of these are great summer colors, but Electric Lime has multi-colored glitter throughout. I gasped when I pulled this one out of the package! I love all the different little glitters. I have come to enjoy these speckled polishes mostly from indie makers because for some reason mainstream brands have a tendency not to make them. I only needed two coats here and again had a very easy application.

A little more info about Northern Star Polish:

"I opened my etsy shop in March 2012 and create vegan and cruelty-free polishes and nail care products in a range of finishes (linear holographic, shimmer, glitters, and more). All polishes are hand mixed in small batches, and are free from Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde, Toluene, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor."

I love indie brands, it is great to see small businesses do well. I highly recommend these polish, they are great quality and are unique. The cuticle oil is amazing and smells wonderful! This collection will be released at 12 p.m. (Central) on June 15th which is tomorrow and Father’s Day! This was my first experience with Northern Star polish, and I have to say I was definitely impressed.

Polishes are available for $8.50 each, and cuticle oil is available with the roll on applicator for $5 or with the original doe foot applicator for $3.

  1. Great swatches! I love reading about new or lesser known indies. I like the blue and red. The macro shot of the red really shows the glitter.
